Vancouver International Fringe Festival

Trying to figure out what to do this weekend? It actually happens to be the last weekend of the Vancouver Fringe Festival, in and around Granville Island. So if you’re at all interested in live theatre, go check it out!

Here’s what we’ve gone and checked out so far:

7×1 Samurai
My rating: 9 out of 10
Possibly the “Pick of the Fringe,” this is a one man show of a dude playing a hopeless Samurai-wannabe who wants to be his town’s protector but is too poor to pay for Samurai classes. He stumbles upon a Samurai who after much deliberation decides to take him under his wing. It’s a comedy/drama that’s about 60 mins long.

Every Job I’ve Ever Had
My rating: 8 out of 10
Barry Smith pretty much tells his life story and how he got to where he is today. He’s gotten through life without ever having to write a resume, so you can pretty much imagine where his life has taken him. He’s a pretty funny dude, and all the pics and videos he brought with him are real and undoctored. It’s an uplifting and kinda inspiring comedy that goes for about 50 mins.

One Man Show
My rating: 7 out of 10
A really random show that doesn’t seem like it has a real script. A guy starts to perform his one man show but another dude shows up saying the same stuff. Turns out they both were given the same script and the show turns into an audition, bending the conventional boundaries of ordinary live theatre. A comedy that goes about 60 mins.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog
My rating: 8.5 out of 10
I gotta say I was most excited for this one.

Based on the DVD short movie starring Neil Patrick Harris and Howard Wollowitz from the Big Bang Theory, the live theatre version stays completely true to its DVD version. Dr. Horrible, who is trying to earn a seat with the Evil League of Evil does a bunch of horrible things to get the attention of the ELE’s leader, Bad Horse. While doing so, turns out he has a soft spot for Penny, a girl he’s too afraid to even introduce himself to. When he finally does, he inadvertently introduces her to his nemesis, Captain Hammer. Chaos and hilarity then ensues. Its a comedy / musical that’s also about 60 mins. long.

NHL 11!

Here it is guys, the official release date is Sept. 7, 2010!

Some of the new features include:

  • Broken sticks and the ability to retain control of a stick-less player. The player will be able to kick or grab the puck, and teammates may offer their own stick as a replacement. Alternatively, the player may return to the bench for another stick.
  • A new physics-based engine, unlike the previous engine, which was animation-based. This ensures that each bodycheck is unique, adding to the realism of the game.
  • A revamped face-off system, which introduces the ability to switch between standard or reversed grips, and to push or block the faceoff opponent. Timing will remain an important part of the faceoff process. Changes to the passing system in which passes are now triggered at the release of the trigger button, instead of the initial pull. The longer the button is held, the stronger the pass will be.
  • An all-new Hit Stick feature, allowing players to control the location of their hit on the opposing player. Whether a player gets hit high or low, each hit will have a different outcome, including penalties and injuries.
  • The new Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) mode, where the players receives a pack of cards and uses them to build up their own team and make it the best they can. The players will earn “EA Pucks” after each game they’ve played in the HUT mode, whether they win or lose.
  • A new control button, the Hustle button, similar to the speed burst button of previous NHL games, but now, in NHL 11, players can use the Hustle button if they’re racing for the puck, to stop the icing or to get a breakaway.
