Teacher Complaint

So I’ve decided to write a formal letter to the School of Business Dean, Arthur Coren. Please have a look and let me know what you think about it. I feel really strongly about it so it could’ve been nastier. I plan to hand this in on Monday.

Dear Dr. Coren:

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction and disappointment with the quality of teaching provided by my International Business professor, Choon Hian Chan.

I enrolled in this course because it was a requisite for the Business Management Diploma. I was initially skeptical when I read negative comments on a professor rating website, however, I decided to register anyway.

Mr. Chan failed to provide students with a supportive learning environment. Concepts were clearer in the textbook versus those that were presented in class. Mr. Chan often became impatient and sometimes rude when students would ask for clarification. Rather than simplifying the concept, Mr. Chan would repeat his original answer or even cut off a student when further questions were presented. As a result, many students including myself have declined to voluntarily participate in class. The deterioration in students’ schoolwork and attitude can be attributed to Mr. Chan’s teaching and communication styles.

When Mr. Chan gave notice of the final exam, it was stated that the students would be given two instead of three hours to complete. I was not unreasonable in expecting a shorter final since the time had been reduced. With 1 hour and 45 minutes into final exam, it was evident that many students were scrambling to finish. After speaking with a handful of students after the time ended, I discovered that each one of them had not finished, either leaving sections blank or providing incomplete answers.

A news release posted on the school’s website states that “Kwantlen’s School of Business prides itself on providing not only an education in sound business management, but also the practical skills necessary to succeed in any line of business.” This is contradictory with what I have experienced this semester in this class. The majority of skills and lessons learned this semester was from my Enterprise Development & Business Planning and Operations Management classes.

I request that Mr. Chan be re-evaluated as a faculty member or be removed from the teaching staff without delay. I also request a meeting with you in the upcoming weeks to further discuss the situation. I can be reached at (xxx) xxx-xxxx.

I love how you stick the school mission statement back at them. It’s a strong and very legitimate argument without sounding bitter or that you’re just trying to get a teacher fired. good job =)
